I was at the gym yesterday and was on the treadmill (doing a quick sprint at 3.5 MPH...fast for an above-knee amputee, but I bet I could go faster), and I was thinking it's been almost two years since I got this new leg and how much it has changed my life. The condition of my stump two years ago was making it physically impossible to do my job in construction and mentally my worst fears seemed to be coming true. I literally couldn't walk without extreme pain.
At the time I had known you for a few years, and you had always told me the design of my socket was not right. You told me that it was literally squeezing the life out of my stump, which was causing the skin to breakdown, but being the stubborn man I am I was hesitant to change until the pain became to much to cope with. Surgery seemed to be my only choice and I didn't want that, but how could I give up on a socket design that I knew for 25 years? I had nothing to lose and surely everything to gain.
You finished the new leg just before I went on vacation, so I put it in the camper and told you that maybe I would give it a shot down the Cape. A couple of days later I tried it on and by the end of the day, boy did it feel good. It really didn't take all that long before I new it was the answer. My skin started clearing up almost immediately and the pressure I felt when walking on the old socket was gone. I was amazed, and still am.
Today I'm thankful I finally listened to you, Ingrid, and will always be grateful for you "giving me my life back"!
